AU Information

AU Name: Kariya Makiri
AU Age: 24
Physical Differences: Kariya appears as he does in Fate/Zero's prologue: as a plain-looking man with dark hair and eyes. He lacks the disfigurements he would develop in the year leading to up the Fourth Holy Grail War, including his scars, blind eye, and white hair.
AU History:

  • Born as the second of two sons in a remote—but otherwise unremarkable—town. Shortly after his birth, his father left his mother to care for he and his brother alone, traveling to Castle Courtsheart to begin his tutelage as a fledgling vampire.
  • Kariya's father returned to his family sometime after his final season. However, all was not well; Kariya has no memories of his father prior to his ascent to vampirism, so he cannot say if there was any dramatic change that came over him as a result of his time at Castle Courtsheart, but the main who raised him was detached and callous to the point of cruelty.
  • Initially, the attention of Kariya's father was on Kariya's older brother. Kariya showed himself to be sensitive and sometimes too empathetic at an early age: not particularly beneficial traits for a potential vampire apprentice. Kariya was still aware of his father's activities, however; the man's interest in the medical sciences had become something grotesque, and he preyed upon the people of their village through his position as a doctor. In exchange for treatment, he would take patients or their family members as test subjects, flesh donors, and thralls.
  • Kariya's brother grew resistant when he became old enough to strike out on his own. He left the family and refused to take part in his father's various cruelties. It was only then that their father turned his attention to Kariya, now a young teenager. He was no longer given the option not to participate in the Makiri family's cruel craft; refusal to cooperate was met with a heavy brow-beating at best—and, at worst, being made a subject for the (milder; his father wouldn't risk permanently damaging his remaining son) experiments himself.
  • Kariya was perceptive, even in his youth; he realized that he had been his father's second choice, and if he proved useless to him, he would return his attention to his older brother—whatever it took to force him back into his father's clutches. In order to shield him from that fate, Kariya chose to sacrifice his own freedom and his morals, becoming an assistant to his father's cruel activities.
  • Though somewhat delayed due to Kariya's later start, when his father believed him ready for it, he arranged for Kariya to attend Castle Courtsheart as well. He would make a far more useful assistant as a vampire than he would as a mere human, after all.

AU Personality: This Kariya is one who never rejected his family. Rather than an unrequited love, his motivational linchpin is his brother; as such, Kariya has never tried to escape the role given to him by his father, effectively held hostage by the implicit threat to his brother's safety.

This has led Kariya to develop a deeply-held loathing for vampire-kind. That in and of itself isn't so different from canon—just replace the word "vampire" with "magus"—but material and circumstantial differences cause that resentment to express itself in different ways. In canon, Kariya is able to spend close to a decade living a placid, ordinary life, free from those constant feelings of rage, horror, and pain; by the time they do come to a head, Kariya has lost much of his ability to control his emotions due to the physical and mental impairments imposed upon him, and as such his hatred expresses itself in explosive, disorganized, and irrational outbursts.

This Kariya, on the other hand, retains something closer to his original demeanor. He is a quiet, soft-spoken man who just wants to keep his head down. As such, his bitterness is a tightly-bottled, seething, toxic thing, causing him to paradoxically disdain and envy others at the same time. It lives as an ever-present companion in his thoughts, but he never expresses it—in part because he has already deemed it useless to try, and in part because he struggles to trust the intentions of others well enough to open up.

It should also be noted that Kariya is a deeply, deeply stubborn person in canon. While that isn't exactly untrue here, he is a lot more fatalistic. As he sees it, his hands are tied, and he doesn't have any choice but to go along with what his father has dictated; he allows himself to be blown around by others' whims much more readily, seeing his attempts to control his own life as futile.

The absence of magical parasites impairing his cognitive functions also makes him a clearer, more astute thinker than he is as we see him in the majority of canon. This is less a "change" than it is a reset on the clock, though; his canon hobbies and talents suggest he prefers quiet, intellectual pursuits when he isn't being filled with flesh-eating worms.

Though it is more a change to Kariya's circumstances than a change to his personality, I also feel it is important to note that his relationship to his primary motivator also differs—and not only because it is his brother rather than an unrequited love. In canon, it is heavily emphasized that Kariya does not resent Aoi for his circumstances; rather, he blames his father Zouken, himself, and even Aoi's husband Tokiomi before he does her. This Kariya, however, does harbor some bitterness toward his brother, resenting him for being "the one to get away" while he has to suffer in his place—particularly in moments where feels as though his sacrifice has gone unnoticed or unthanked.

Currently, he is emotionally stable enough to recognize these feelings as irrational. He feels quite guilty about them, and they're another thing he represses. Still, they're important to note!

Novice Information

Starting Season: First Season
Maker: Tighnari if the player is still interested in it, NPC dad if not
Anticipated Court:
Silver. This is partly due to his backstory; his father is himself a Silver Court vampire, with his interest in biomedical studies echoing the Matou family's unique form of magecraft. However, many of Kariya's own tendencies make him suited to Silver as well. He is withdrawn and thoughtful, favoring intellectual pursuits, and his sensitivity and empathy make healing the most appealing of the vampire abilities.

It is possible that he might try to change courts as part of his character arc. However, neither Blue nor Red nor Gold fit him particularly well; both the subtle manipulations of Red and high-handed command of Gold are antithetical to his nature in many ways, and though he is capable of great outbursts of emotion, the overall wildness of the Blue Court would likely be uncomfortable for him. If he were to change courts, the option I could most easily see is Black; he has a desire to distance himself from other vampires, and as in canon, his resentments could easily turn to a drive to kill his own kind.
